The Act was signed into law by President George W. Bush on December 19, 2007 and went into effect on December 19, 2008.
What is the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act (VGBA)?
The Act is a national law that has three major components:
1) The Act prohibits the manufacture, sale or distribution of suction outlets and covers that are not ASME/ANSI A112.19.8-2007 certified;
2) The Act requires public pools and spas to be fitted with certain equipment that is intended to prevent death or injury caused by entrapment, evisceration, or entanglement; and
3) The Act allows States that have laws with similar requirements for public and residential pools and spas to apply for grants.
