Simple Steps Save Lives: New Campaign Encourages the Public to Pool Safely This Summer

Heading to the pool this summer? Remember to Pool Safely!

As the temperatures get warmer, it’s time to put on sunscreen and head outside. If your summer adventures take you to a pool or spa, please remember to Pool Safely. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates each year nearly 300 children younger than five drown in swimming pools and spas and more than 3,000 that age go to hospital emergency rooms due to non-fatal submersion injuries. An unknown number of these hospitalizations result in permanent disability, including brain damage.

There are simple, proven water safety steps you and your family should take to safeguard against accidents at pools and spas. Key steps include:

 Stay Alert: Stay close and watch your child by the pool.

 Know Water Safety Skills: Learn to swim and practice CPR.

 Maintain Barriers: Install protective barriers, such as four-sided fences and pool alarms.

 Avoid Entrapments: Never enter a pool or spa with a loose, broken or missing drain cover.

Just adding one extra water safety step can make all the difference. The safest system is being alert at all times, knowing life-saving skills and having the right equipment (compliant drain covers, barriers, alarms and sensors). Add as many precautions as possible no matter how safe and responsible you already are.
